what's on the horizon...

This is an art blog where I will be adding new drawings and paintings of Hula girls and Tiki Gods every week, sometimes more, along with related videos, Hawaiiana and tons of Tiki trivia. So crack open a cold one and enjoy the show.

"Mele Kalikimaka" ( Merry Christmas in Hawaiian )

MELE KALIKIMAKA IS THE HAWAIIAN WORD THAT MEANS MERRY CHRISTMAS.
WHEN THE MISSIONARIES  ARRIVED IN HAWAII IN 1820 THEY INTRODUCED  CHRISTMAS TO THE HAWAIIAN PEOPLE.  THE HAWAIIAN'S FOUND MERRY CHRISTMAS DIFFICULT TO PRONOUNCE.  THE PHONETIC TRANSLATION,  MELE KALIKIMAKA  ROLLED MORE EASILY OFF THEIR TONGUES.
THEN IN 1950, BING CROSBY & THE ANDREW SISTERS TURNED IT INTO THE SMASH  HIT SONG WE ALL ARE SO FAMILIAR WITH.
