"Hau' Oli Makahiki Ho" ( Happy New Year, in Hawaiian )
"HAU' OLI MAKAHIKI HO" MEANS "HAPPY NEW YEAR" IN HAWAIIAN.
THE "MAKAHIKI" IN HAWAIIAN HISTORY WAS A FOUR MONTH TIME OF PEACE AND PROSPERITY, WHEN WAR WAS 'KAPU' ( FORBIDDEN ) AND WORK WAS MEANT TO BE LIGHT. IT WAS A TIME FOR CELEBRATING THE HARVEST AND "LONO" THE HAWAIIAN TIKI GOD OF FERTILITY AND RAIN. TODAY THE MAKAHIKI IS STILL CELEBRATED WITH FESTIVALS APPROXIMATELY BETWEEN THE MONTHS OF OCTOBER TO FEBRUARY.
